What is Easter? History tells us that Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The story is written in the New Testament of the Bible. The miraculous resurrection has occurred three days after Jesus was crucified by the Romans in Jerusalem. The Easter holiday is the ending of the “Passion of Christ,” a series of events and holidays that begins with Lent (40-day period of fasting, prayer and sacrifice), and ends with Holy Week.

The Holy Week includes Holy Thursday (the celebration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his 12 Apostles), Good Friday (the crucifixion of Jesus), and Easter Sunday. Although it’s the most important holiday in the Christian faith, there are many traditions associated with Easter which date back to pre-Christian, pagan times

Easter in the Western Church (Catholics and Protestants) is celebrated this year on April 21. In Eastern Europe where Orthodoxy is majority, Easter is celebrated a week later after the Catholic Easter. So for the Eastern Church the Orthodox Easter is celebrated on April 28, 2019. Why is that? Below are some details, but if you already know about it or you’re not interested in finding out,  you can skip the following paragraphs and go directly to the quotes & appetizers sections below.

Orthodox Easter, the Resurrection Sunday is the oldest and most important celebration in the Eastern Christian tradition, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, after his crucifixion and death. The entire Christian faith is based on the resurrection of Jesus from death, rising from the grave, fact that demonstrates that Jesus is the Son of God. The holiday is called Pascha (in greek), which comes from the Jewish pesach meaning Passover.

Pascha is a movable holiday, meaning that it’s date is not fixed in the calendar and can be on a different date each year. Most of the time, the Ortodox Easter is different from the date in Western Christianity (Catholic and Protestant). Usually it is one week later, but sometimes even four or five weeks later. Every now and then though, it happens that some years the Orthodox Easter coincides with Western Easter and both holidays fall on the same date.

,In Western Christianity, the date of Easter is based on the Gregorian calendar and can fall between March 22 and April 25. The Orthodox / Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian calendar. The difference between the two calendars is 13 days. That is why the Orthodox Easter can fall anytime between April 4 and May 8. What the two churches agree on, both Western and Eastern, is that Easter is to be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, and always after Passover.
