A physiotherapist’s story: how Jonathan Goh built a successful business through determination and professionalism

Spine & Joint Kuching is an integrated health center dealing with conditions affecting the spine and joints. It includes taking care of the patients by combining the benefits of manual adjustments and high-tech treatments to stimulate healing without medication or surgical intervention.

Jonathan Goh managed to build a team of professionals specialized to help people achieve optimal musculoskeletal health. He invests all his energy in offering some of the best treatment options in Malaysia.

From his answers, we can see how he managed to create a successful business and which technique does he use to heal his patients. Enjoy! 🙂

1. Who or what inspired you to become a physiotherapist and how did you end up starting your business?

It was a happy accident. When I wanted to enroll myself for the nursing course, the faculty ’s counselor talked to me and he guided me towards physical therapy.

It took me 10 years of perfecting my hands-on skills by working with hospitals, sports centers, and clinics to get to where I am now, as I was confident that one day I’m gonna be able to work independently.

2. What were the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business and how did you overcome them?

The challenge I have always faced was the fear that patients could look at me for the first time and question my capabilities in treating them. It helped to overcome this hurdle by learning how to communicate with them and by  explaining more specific and understandable their diagnosis & treatment plan, thus reassuring them that they are in good hands. It helps that I am able to manipulate their spines & pressure points, which is not an easy-to-do thing.

3. How do you differentiate yourself in the market?

I differentiate myself by my ability to provide an accurate diagnosis to the patients in a professional way.

4. What part of your business are you improving? (branding, clientele, technique, etc.)

Now I’m working on training future therapists and passing on my skills and knowledge.

5. What advice do you have for any new or upcoming physiotherapists?

We need to stop thinking a physiotherapist is merely a person who does therapeutic ultrasound, or is instructed by doctors to place an ice pack on a sprained back or an ankle. We can do more, we are more than that.

I would say that the most important part of being a successful physiotherapist is having a critical thinking when treating the patient. I advise them not to talk about the patient’s personal life. On the other hand, why are we giving this ice pack when we can use another more effective modality to heal them? We must be flexible rather than rigid.

6. How is Appointfix helping you?

We get calls from patients even after the clinic has closed and it has been easy for us to make appointments across devices with multiple therapists & support staff. Also, it helps that it can be synced with my personal Google calendar. We are currently using SalesForce alongside our systems, but I love Appointfix for the reason that it’s a mobile app.
