1. Who or what inspired you to become a personal trainer and how did you end up starting your business?

My own struggles with weight and my past experiences with bullying inspired me to become a better version of myself, which lead me to the gym and personal training.

2. What were the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business and how did you overcome them?

The challenge I faced and sometimes I still face is growing a consistent “family“ or group of people who are willing to be a part of something that helps them get better results in and out of the gym. It’s hard to build a reputation or notoriety in the neighborhood to attract more people and bring value to the area. I find that what helps me connect with more people and have the expected results is truly caring about creating a community of hard-working people who want to do better for themselves and have a supportive environment to turn to whenever they need it.

3. How do you differentiate yourself in the market?

I try to be myself and not an image of anyone else. Aside from being myself, I try to uphold professional standards as much as possible (being personable, customer service, continuing education, etc.). I want to always offer the best experience possible for my clients.

4. What part of your business are you improving? (branding, clientele, technique, etc.)

I usually look in detail at every single part of my business and try to improve it. If I had to put something as a number-one priority for me right now, I’d say that it’s branding. Not necessarily logo and icon branding, but more personal branding. For example, what’s it like to work with me, what I believe in, how I coach, core values, and overall experience.

5. What advice do you have for any new or upcoming personal trainers?

All the articles you saved and read —or haven’t read— about being a great trainer are right. You need to be seen often as the guy (or girl) to which people go to when they need results in fitness and nutrition. You need to keep good connections and a friendly personality with those around you and even more.

😴You need to take care of yourself! This is a stressful lifestyle we chose. We often neglect our own health or find it difficult to manage all the things we need to do. Keep yourself as the number one priority. If the engine blows out in a car, the car is useless and all the people in it won’t benefit from it too.

📚Continue improving your education. If you fall behind with your knowledge you won’t be able to help people as you should.

⏳Be patient. If I’d compare myself to other coaches who have 9 years of experience and I’d stress myself out from it it wouldn’t be good. I have to realize that where I am right now is perfectly well and in the next 9 years, I will be even better than today. Keep this positive attitude in your mind.

6. How is Goldie helping you?

Goldie is helping me uphold my professionalism by offering a scheduling reminder service to my clients. This helps them arrive at their session and that helps me too, so we are all happy! 🙂

I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan

Thank you Thomas Mercatante for showing us that the only way to succeed as a personal trainer is to keep working and thank you for using Goldie! 🙂
